Our New Musical Director for 2022
Garry Bailey
Garry is a native of Shropshire, being born under the Wrekin. He has spent the majority of his life in and around musical theatre, having musically directed various productions for different societies throughout the West Midlands. He studied conducting originally with the late T. David Hales and then Mr. Keith Downing. Subsequently he furthered his musical abilities with renowned conducting tutor Michael Rose OBE. He has made an in-depth study of the baton technique of Sir Adrian Boult and extended these studies with the internationally distinguished late William Hayward.
Garry had a ten-year tenure as Musical Director of the Shropshire Orpheus Savoyards. He is considered to have an encyclopaedic knowledge and understanding of the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, having conducted the entire canon. He spent a season as conductor of The Cannock Chase Light Orchestra. He is also current Artistic and music director for Whitchurch Operatic Society and has spent the last eight years as musical director of the Little Theatre Donnington based in Telford.
Along with all this Garry had conducted three ‘Last Night of the Proms’ style concerts, many a ‘Messiah’ and co-conducted a marathon Gilbert & Sullivan sing along at the prestigious Birmingham Town Hall. He also worked in conjunction with French organist Nykko Michel Grégoire. In addition, Garry has arranged many pieces of music for different bands, orchestras and singers for both live concerts and recording sessions and is in the throes of co-writing a musical.
