2019
Ed Taylor, our Musical Director, picked up the conductor's baton from our previous Musical Director, Mr Stephen Lomas, in July 2019. Ed, from Wombourne, South Staffordshire has been actively involved in music since childhood, trying his hand at the recorder, choral singing and playing keyboard until settling on the clarinet, saxophone and piano. By the age of 18 he had attained Grade 8 Clarinet with Distinction and an A-Level in Music. He was an active member of the West Midlands Concert Band as a clarinettist and performed in carnivals to convention centres as a Jazz saxophonist. As a soloist he attained first prize in the Dudley Festival of Music in his category, with a performance of Lorito Caprice by Francisco Gomez.
During his time at the University of Birmingham studying for a Masters Degree in Physics, Ed continued to nurture his passion for music and obtained a scholarship to continue his clarinet performance studies. Under the tutelage of clarinettist Ted Watson, Ed performed in the University Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the University Concert Band. He also helped to form the Heisenberg Quartet with other musical physicists and played in chamber music concerts in the Birmingham area.
Following a hiatus which involved secondary school teacher training, a Masters in Education and becoming an established Science teacher, Ed returned to music fully, and in 2016 joined Alveley Village Band playing the tenor saxophone. Blown away with the friendly, family-esque feel, dedication of its members and fantastic local concert performances he became a committee member and helped with the inner workings of the band. In 2017, he helped to form Barrels and Bells Clarinet Choir with other AVB clarinettists and took the mantle of leading the group in terms of arranging music and directing performance. It was here that Ed developed a passion for conducting. Barrels and Bells have performed at a wedding, an underground cavern and have so far (August 2019) raised over £1000 for various local and national charities.
When approached to conduct Alveley Village Band Ed jumped at the chance. His intention is to continue the good work of past conductors by developing the musicianship and appeal of the band, and put on exemplary concerts for local audiences.

It's September which means the nights will start getting darker and Autumn is officially on it's way. What it also means is that it's nearly time for Alveley Village Band to return from our summer break! This year rehearsals will begin again on Saturday 15th September.
We're always keen to hear from new players who would like to join. From woodwind to strings, brass to percussion there is a place for you here at Alveley Village Band, although we're particularly keen to hear from Brass players (ideally a trombone player) and we're currently looking for a new drummer. We rehearse every Saturday morning from 9.30am to 1130am and we don't hold auditions, just come and join us for a couple of weeks to see if you think being a part of Alveley Village Band is for you.
If you'd like any more information or would like to enquire about joining, send us a message. We've got a fantastic Christmas season to look forward to so now really is a great time to join.

Alveley Village Band is a relaxed environment where a group of like-minded people get together for the fun of playing music. We also believe in encouraging the musicians of tomorrow and with a growing number of under 18’s joining the band, we take their safety and security very seriously. With this in mind, here is a copy of our safeguarding policy and procedures for children, young persons and vulnerable people. AVB have put these measures in place to ensure a fun and enjoyable environment for all young persons who wish to join the band. If you’d like any further information about the policy please contact us and we’ll get back to you as soon as possible.

It’s all systems go for concert season and to help kick off Alveley Village Band’s packed out performance schedule, the Shropshire Star paid us a visit at rehearsals this week. We’ve got some major events coming up over the next few months starting on April 16 where the band will be performing in aid of the Veteran’s Association. Alveley Village Band drummer Tom will taking part in a world record attempt in aid of The Ark Shrewsbury, a local charity supporting homeless and vulnerable people. When he’s not keeping the beat of the band, 14 year old Tom joins forces with Louis to play as Guitar Cubed, a guitar and cajon duo who gig all year at various pubs and festivals. (For those unsure, a cajon is 6 sided box shaped percussion instrument played by hand...he's a talented lad our Tom!)
Guitar Cubed is attempting to undertake a 24 hour+ busk starting on 1st April and they’re hoping to set a new world record, currently standing at 24 hours and 30 mins. The attempt is part of The Big Busk, filling Shrewsbury with music and entertainment, all for a great cause.
We’re all really proud of Tom here at Alveley Village Band. We have no doubt he and Louis will smash that record attempt. We’ll be supporting them all the way!
